Understanding WASSCE and American GPA Systems
In Nigeria, students use WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination) grades to measure their academic performance. Each grade has a specific point value and shows how well a student has done. For example:
- A1 means “Excellent” and earns 8 points.
- B2 means “Very Good” and earns 7 points.
- F9 means “Fail” and earns 0 points.

This system is clear and straightforward for students in Nigeria and other West African countries, but things can get confusing when comparing WASSCE grades to the American grading system.
American Grading System: How It’s Different
In the United States, schools often use a 4.0 GPA scale or a percentage scale. The highest grade, A+, equals 4.3 points on the GPA scale, while a failing grade, F, earns 0 points. Unlike WASSCE, an “Excellent” grade in the U.S. starts at a much higher percentage—93% for an A grade, compared to 75% in WASSCE.

Weighted GPA in the American System
In the U.S., some students take more challenging classes, like Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Honors courses. These courses give students a “bump” in their GPA to reward the extra difficulty.
- AP and IB courses usually add 1.0 extra point.
- Honors courses add 0.5 extra points.
For example, if a student takes eight classes and earns A’s in all of them:
- 4 AP classes count as 5.0 points each.
- 2 Honors classes count as 4.5 points each.
- 2 Regular classes count as 4.0 points each.
This gives a weighted GPA of 4.625, calculated like this:
- Add up all the GPA points: (4 × 5.0) + (2 × 4.5) + (2 × 4.0) = 37.
- Divide by the total number of classes: 37 ÷ 8 = 4.625 weighted GPA.

When converting grades from WASSCE to the American system, it’s important to know the differences. For example:
- A WASSCE A1 starts at 75%, while an American A starts at 93%.
- This means a student who is an A student in Africa might only be a C student in the U.S.
